1000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a Library program that encourages all Eastern Lancaster County families and caregivers to read 1,000 books with their young children before they enter kindergarten.

Studies have shown that families who start reading aloud to their children at birth help strengthen their language skills and build their vocabulary — two important tools when they begin learning to read in kindergarten.

How Does 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Work?

  • Register – Visit the ELANCO Library, and take home your first reading log.
  • Track Your Reading – Each time you read a book with your child, write down the title.
  • Show us Your Reading Logs – When you reach 100 books, bring in your reading log, and get a sticker and the pages to record the next 100 books.
  • Read More Books! – When you get all the way to 1000, you’ll receive a free book to keep and a certificate of completion.

I Can Read Wall of Fame

We love it when kids learn to read, so we are celebrating new readers by letting them show off their new reading skills! Kindergarteners and First Graders are welcome to become Wall of Famers – just come in and read part of any book to one of our children’s librarians. We’ll take your photo to post on our bulletin board so everyone can see you are now a reader! Readers will also receive an “I Can Read” Certificate and a small prize.
